While these other high tech processes might appear to sound great, there is very little data to support their use. The other problem is that they cost thousands and often tens of thousands of dollars. You have to realize Stem Cell Prolotherapy and/or Bone Marrow Prolotherapy has to improve on the results that Caring Medical has already published.
Dr. Hauser’s Prolotherapy results with the Hackett-Hemwall technique at Caring Medical:
Let’s look at some of the fantastic results that we have published on patients seen here in the office.
Prolotherapy as an alternative to surgery: Thirty-four patients with average musculoskeletal pain duration of 27 months who were told by their medical doctor/surgeon that surgery was needed, including 20 joint replacements and nine arthroscopic procedures, were treated with Hackett-Hemwall dextrose Prolotherapy in lieu of surgery. Patients were followed prospectively and asked questions regarding levels of pain, stiffness, and other physical and psychological symptoms, as well as questions related to activities of daily living before and after their last Prolotherapy treatment.
In this study, Prolotherapy was able to eliminate the need for surgery in 31 out of 34 patients. Often patients can immediately return to work after receiving Prolotherapy. Since results with Prolotherapy are often permanent, no future treatments are needed. To read the full study published in the Journal of Prolotherapy, click here.
Prolotherapy for Meniscus Tears: Meniscus injuries are a common cause of knee pain, accounting for one sixth of knee surgeries. Tears are the most common form of meniscus injuries, and have poor healing ability primarily because less than 25% of the menisci receive a direct blood supply. A retrospective study was done involving 24 patients, representing 28 knees, whose primary knee complaints were due to meniscal pathology documented by MRI. The average number of Prolotherapy visits was six and the patients were followed on average 18 months after their last Prolotherapy visit. Prolotherapy caused a statistically significant decline in the patients’ knee pain and stiffness. Starting and ending knee pain declined from 7.2 to 1.6, while stiffness went from 6.0 to 1.8. Prolotherapy caused large improvements in other clinically relevant areas such as range of motion, crepitation, exercise, and walking ability. Patients stated that the response to Prolotherapy met their expectations in 27 out of the 28 knees (96%). Only one out of the 28 patients ended up getting surgery after Prolotherapy. Charity Clinic data: For 10 years we treated patients quarterly at a rural IL charity clinic. Data was collected and analyzed on these patients. We published studies on treating ankle, shoulder, elbow, hand/finger, low back, knees, wrist, neck, TMJ, and hip pain with Hackett-Hemwall Prolotherapy. These patients did no other medical care and the treatments were only done quarterly versus monthly. This table summarizes the before and after pain levels in all body parts. As you can see, pain and stiffness improved dramatically in every body part. Each of these studies showed Hackett-Hemwall Prolotherapy caused a statistically significant decline in pain. The average duration of pain in these patients prior to Prolotherapy was almost five years!
There are various stem cell therapies that charge patients $8000-15,000 to culture their cells and then inject them. You would postulate that these therapies would have to get much better results than Hackett-Hemwall Prolotherapy to even justify it. Our overall success rate with traditional Prolotherapy at Caring Medical is 85-90% for all patients. So when Caring Medical does Bone Marrow Prolotherapy and/or Stem Cell Prolotherapy we are doing it on top of Hackett-Hemwall Prolotherapy. Because of our experience with a particular patient, we already know which patients will benefit from adding Bone Marrow or Stem Cell Prolotherapy. In other words, because we specialize in Hackett-Hemwall Prolotherapy, we know which patients need something in addition to Hackett-Hemwall Prolotherapy. One of the additional modalities we can offer is Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Prolotherapy. For someone with a particularly large articular cartilage defect, very advanced osteoarthritis, or large labral or meniscus tear, it is hoped that BMP and SCP will stimulate healing faster than regular HHP.
How much does BMP cost?
The costs of Hackett-Hemwall Prolotherapy are discussed in detail here. The process of obtaining, processing, and injecting bone marrow is an additional charge on top of the Prolotherapy charge for the body part needing treatment. We do two types of Bone Marrow Prolotherapy, direct and concentrated. Depending on your medical history and severity of your injury, Dr. Hauser will make a recommendation as to which type he feels you need.
Direct BMP: $1100 + Prolotherapy charge (ie $350 per knee, for example) = $1450
Concentrated BMP: $2400 + Prolotherapy charge (ie $350 per knee, for example) = $2750
Data collection on bmp:
At Caring Medical, we are always striving to provide the most comprehensive Prolotherapy treatments to our patients. Bone Marrow or Stem Cell Prolotherapy is new technology and the verdict is still out on its effectiveness in humans. Studies have proven its effectiveness in animals and case reports have been documented in the literature about various types of bone marrow injections’ effectiveness in human joints. We will work hard to collect and present our patient data as soon as we can. For those of you who have not received any kind of Prolotherapy to your injured joint(s) and have severe osteoarthritis or joint degeneration, you may want to consider BMP. For those with severely degenerated knees, we will reimburse you for the cost of before and after x-rays done here at a local facility (if you are a candidate for knee BMP) that will help us document improvement. The cost of the BMP will be your responsibility as stated above.
